The year the house “Café du Point de Vue” was founded
The 17th century marks a turning point in the history of Liège. Louis XIV reigns in France, the princes of Bavaria in Liège. The quarrel between the Chiroux and the Grignoux is still tearing the city apart. These endless social struggles and a new “bourgeois and capitalist” economy give the city a new face.
The place de la République Française, once the “Place aux chevaux”, was for centuries considered the most important square in Liège. Nothing of the city's life escapes it. Its residents have the best seats for the spectacle of the city's struggles and pleasures. From street brawls to revolutions, from popular celebrations to solemn receptions of princes and emperors, from simple news items to society gatherings and sporting contests, the heart of Liège beats on the Place aux Chevaux.

Eight centuries on the square
For eight centuries, the place de la République Française was called the “Place aux chevaux”. From the beginning of the 19th century it became the “Place de Comédie”, then the “Place du Spectacle” or “Place du Théâtre”, before becoming the “Place de la République Française” in 1918.
